HISTORY

History of Baseball in Geneva

The history of baseball in Geneva began in 1959, when the American Tom Lavin, then employed by DuPont de Nemours, decided to bring together a few friends around his favorite sport. From this initiative, the Geneva Baseball League was founded, marking the first official steps of baseball in the canton.

Over the decades, the league underwent many changes and evolutions. It brought together various clubs under its umbrella, including the Geneva Hound Dogs, who were particularly active during the 1980s and 1990s. This period was marked by major sporting success, with a National League B championship title in 1988, followed by a National League A championship title in 1990.

In the early 2000s, the Hound Dogs became the Geneva Dragons. After a transition phase, baseball in Geneva experienced renewed growth from 2015 onward, notably thanks to the reorganization of the Dragons’ adult team. This momentum paid off with victories in the Swiss Romande League in 2018 and 2019.

At the same time, the club made youth development a priority. A dedicated structure was established for children aged 4 to 15, including competitive junior teams (U12 and U15). This development policy proved highly successful, illustrated by Swiss championship titles for the U15 team in 2018 and 2024, as well as a runner-up finish in the 2021 season. The U12 team were Swiss champions in 2022 and 2023.

Today, the adult team of the Geneva Dragons competes in the Swiss First League. In 2025, the club won the championship, opening up new prospects and fueling the ambition of a return to the national league.

Over the years of development, several baseball and softball clubs joined the Geneva league, including the Tigers, Geneva’s second adult team, as well as the CERN Colliders, renamed in 2022 as “GBSL – Geneva Baseball and Softball League.”

The Geneva Baseball and Softball League continues to serve as the supervisory body for clubs in the region and as a political intermediary.
Driven by their history and ambitions, the Geneva Dragons are now preparing to take flight across Switzerland.
