HISTORY

The history of baseball in Geneva dates back to 1959, when American Tom Lavin, working for Dupont de Nemours, decided to set up a team for his favorite sport with a few friends and created the “Geneva Baseball League”.

Subject to a number of changes over the years, and taking various clubs under its wing, the league will experience a new lease of life from 2015, notably through the reorganization of the main Geneva Dragons club, already present for many years.

With a focus on youth training, the club set up a training structure for children aged 6 to 15, which proved highly successful, winning the Swiss U15 championship in 2018 and finishing runner-up in the 2021 season.

At the same time, an adult Geneva Dragons team was re-established, which now takes part in the Ligue Suisse Romande de Baseball championship, also with notable success, winning two championships in 2018 and 2019, and finishing runner-up in 2020 and 2021.

During these years of development, several softball and baseball clubs will join the league, which will be renamed “GBSL – Geneva Baseball and Softball League” in 2022 and “GBSL – Ligue Genevoise de Baseball et Softball” in 2023.

From 2023, a complete overhaul of the two entities will be undertaken, with the aim of promoting the sport within the canton of Geneva.

To this end, the club will change its name to officially become Les Dragons de Genève, to increase the club’s proximity to the region and promote the sport for all.

The Ligue Genevoise de Baseball et Softball continues to act as a supervisory body for clubs in the region, and as a political intermediary.

The story of the Geneva Dragons is just beginning!
